May 20: 1934. An International Congress of Teachers was held in Kyiv.

1961. The Council of Ministers of Ukrainian SSR approved a decision On Creating the Annual Taras Shevchenko Prize for Outstanding Works in Literature, the Fine Arts, Music, Theater, and Cinematography.

May 21: 1918. At the First Ukrainian Trade Unions Conference the All-Ukrainian Council of Trade Unions was founded.

1921. The Council of People’s Commissars passed a decision On Fighting Illiteracy and created an All-Ukrainian Commission headed by Hryhory Petrovsky.

May 22: 1861. Taras Shevchenko was reburied at the Chornecha Hill near Kaniv.

1954. The Presidium of the Supreme Council of USSR passed an order On Awarding Ukrainian SSR and Its Capital, Kyiv, the Order of Lenin.

May 23: 1917. The Central Rada approved the First Universal proclaiming Ukraine’s sovereignty and autonomy.

1918. Negotiations began between the Ukrainian State and Russia.

May 24: 1991. The Ministry of Justice of Ukraine registered the Green Party of Ukraine.

1995. During Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma’s official visit to Estonia a Declaration on Intensifying Cooperation and Partnership between the two countries was signed.

May 25: 1811. The Feodosiya Museum of Antiquities, now Feodosiya Local History Museum, was founded.

1994. The Ministry of Justice of Ukraine registered the Human Rights Party.

May 26: 1648. The Bohdan Khmelnytsky’s Cossack Army defeated Polish troops near Korsun.

1920. The Ivan Mazepa government resigned in Vinnytsia an Supreme Otaman of the Direktoriya Semen Petliura appointed a new UNR government headed by Vyacheslav Prokopovych.
