May 21: 1918. The First Ukrainian Conference of Trade Unions founded the All-Ukrainian Council of Trade Unions.

1921. The Council of People’s Commissars of Ukrainian SSR passed a decision On Combating Illiteracy.

May 22: 1940. The Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR passed a decision On Establishing a Decoration for Heroes of Socialist Labor, the Hammer and Sickle Gold Medal.

1957. At a zone council of agricultural workers in Leningrad Nikita Khrushchev announced the goal of overtaking and surpassing the US in the production of meat, milk, and butter per capita in the next few years.

May 23: 1917. The Central Rada issued the First Universal proclaiming Ukraine’s sovereignty and autonomy.

1949. The Odesa Film Studio was founded.

May 24. The Day of Slavic Literacy and Culture.

1991. The Ministry of Justice registered the Green Party of Ukraine.

1995. Ukraine and Estonia signed international agreements On Free Trade and On Sea Navigation.

May 25: 1653. The Assembly of the Land (zemsky sobor) opened in Moscow to consider the issue of Ukraine’s becoming a protectorate of Russia.

1709. By order of Peter I the Zaporozhzhian Sich was destroyed.

May 26. The Day of Kyiv.

1982. The Presidium of the USSR Supreme Soviet issued an order On Awarding Kyiv the Order of Friendship of Peoples on the occasion of the city’s 1500th anniversary.

May 27: 1821. The Mykolayiv Astronomical Observatory was founded.

1967. A protest meeting was held at the headquarters of the Communist Party of Ukraine Central Committee against arresting the participants of a Shevchenko soiree.
