April 23: 1959. The First Congress of Journalists of Ukraine began, creating the Journalists Union of Ukraine.

1996. Ukraine was admitted to the Nuclear Providers Group.

April 24: 1919. The Council of People’s Commissars of Ukrainian SSR passed a decree On Transferring All Private Higher and Secondary Educational Institutions to State Maintenance.

1949. The Taras Shevchenko State Literary and Arts Museum was founded in Kyiv.

April 25: 1994. The National Television and Radio Broadcasting Council was created in Ukraine.

1995. By a decree of President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma the Social Security Fund for World War II Veterans was created.

April 26: 1986. Day of Chornobyl Tragedy: the accident at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Station took place.

1996. President Kuchma issued a decree On Creating the Chornobyl Center for Nuclear Safety, Radioactive Waste Products, and Radioecology.

April 27: 1906. The first Ukrainian political journal in the Russian language, Ukrainsky Vestnik [Ukrainian Courier], began publication in St. Petersburg.

1995. Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine approved Ukraine’s first state decoration, the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky.

April 28: 1887. The first monopolistic union in Ukraine and Russia, a sugar production syndicate, was created at the Congress of Sugar Producers of Southern Russia.

1947. The Vistula operation began in Poland, deportation of over 140,000 Ukrainians form the East regions of the country to West and North-West ones.

April 29: 1990. A Congress of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group started in Kyiv, passing a decision On Dismissing the Ukrainian Helsinki Group and Creating on Its Basis the Ukrainian Republican Party..
