July 20 International Chess Day 1806. The 1805 Franco-Russian
War ended with the Paris Peace Treaty.

1993.  The UN Security Council determined that the Russian
Supreme Soviet resolution on the status of Sevastopol has no juridical
force.

July 21 1941.  Soviet troops abandoned Vinnytsia after fierce
fighting.

1956.  The Ukrainian State Circus opened in Kyiv.

July 22 1959.  The An-10 Ukrayina aircraft made its maiden
flight from Moscow to Simferopol with passengers on board.

1970.  The USSR Council of Ministers resolved to open the
Ternopil Financial and Economic Institute.

July 23 971.  Kyiv Prince Sviatoslav and the Byzantine Empire
concluded a peace treaty.

1990.  Leonid Kravchuk was elected Chairman of the Verkhovna
Rada of the Ukrainian SSR.

July 24 1917.  The First All-Ukrainian Workers' Congress
was opened.

1943.  The rank of "officer" was reinstated by the Decree
of the USSR Supreme Soviet Presidium for the first time after 1917.

July 25 1983.  The construction of a 4451-km-long transcontinental
gas pipeline Urengoy-Pomary-Uzhhorod was completed.

1984.  Svetlana Savitskaya became the first woman cosmonaut
to spacewalk.

July 26 1648.  Insurgents led by Maksym Kryvonis routed
Wysznewiecki's Polish army near Starokostiantynov.

1929.  Oleksandr Dovzhenko's classic film, Arsenal,
was released.
