Oct. 21 1897: The Chornomorsky Shipyard is launched in Mariupil.

1989: The founding meeting of the revived Shevchenko Scientific Society takes place in Lviv.

Oct. 22 1918: Kamianets-Podilsky Ukrainian State University opens its doors.

1995: President Leonid Kuchma of Ukraine addresses the UN General Assembly session commemorating the organization’s 50th anniversary.

Oct. 23 1859: The first Sunday school opens in Kyiv.

1990: The Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR resolves to abolish Article 6 of the Constitution, which sets forth the “guiding role” of the Communist Party

Oct. 24 1991: The Verkhovna Rada adopts a resolution on Ukraine’s nuclear-free status.

1994: During his visit to Canada President Leonid Kuchma of Ukraine signs a friendship and cooperation agreement between the two countries.

Oct. 25 1968: The last power unit of the Kyiv Hydropower Station goes into operation.

2001: The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopts the new Land Code.

Oct. 26 1939: A popular assembly convenes in Western Ukraine to declare the transfer of all power to the urban and rural working masses and the establishment of Soviet rule, etc.

1947: The largest deportation of Ukrainians (approximately 78,000 people) in the postwar period begins in the western oblasts of Ukraine.

Oct. 27 1659: In Pereiaslav Yurii Khmelnytsky and the Muscovite government sign an agreement regulating the political and legal status of Cossack Ukraine in the Muscovite state (the so-called Pereiaslav Articles).

2006: At the 10th Ukraine-EU summit in Helsinki, the foreign ministers initial an agreement aimed at simplifying visa procedures and an agreement on readmission.
