Oct. 20 1995: The all-Ukrainian Orthodox Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Kyiv Patriarchate (UOC KP), elects Metropolitan Filaret patriarch of the UOC KP.

Oct. 21 1989: The founding meeting of the revived Shevchenko Scientific Society takes place in Lviv.

Oct. 22 1918: Kamianets-Podilsky Ukrainian State University opens its doors.

Oct. 23 1990: The Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR resolves to abolish Article 6 of the Constitution, which sets forth the “guiding role” of the Communist Party.

Oct. 24 1994: During his visit to Canada President Leonid Kuchma of Ukraine signs a friendship and cooperation agreement between the two countries.

Oct. 25 2001: The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopts the new Land Code.
