What Do You Get When You Cross a Dove and a Bee?

8 December, 1998 - 00:00

The Reforms and Order Party and Rukh have announced they have united
into a political bloc. Their leaders Vyacheslav Chornovil and Viktor Pynzenyk
demonstrated unity and solidarity at a December 2 news conference.

The bloc's number one task is to nominate and support a joint presidential
candidate in the 1999 campaign. When asked by The Day whether this
bloc means that Rukh will back Viktor Yushchenko as his party's favorite,
Viktor Pynzenyk was diplomatic, saying that Mr. Yushchenko's candidacy
has been discussed and that this issue is being negotiated with him. The
overall impression was that both leaders tried to avoid the single candidate
topic. Mr. Chornovil pointed out that Viktor Yushchenko has not as yet
agreed to his being nominated and mentioned candidates put forth by Rukh
previously: Chornovil, Udovenko, and Kostenko, adding in the end that Yushchenko's
candidacy had been discussed.

However, both parties are unanimous about Leonid Kuchma, whose candidacy
has not been even discussed. Vyacheslav Chornovil stressed that he had
never said he would support the current President.

A Right-Center coalition could be formed around this bloc, and the leaders
do not rule out the possibility of NDP participation, although Mr. Pynzenyk
said in no uncertain terms that this participation will depend on NDP's
backing Viktor Yushchenko or "another like-minded candidate."
