The hopelessness of the situation has become obvious. The People’s Deputies have been caucusing a week, and nobody knows what will happen. NDP scion Oleksandr Yemets informally states, without much conviction it seems, that a package deal to reelect Oleksandr Moroz as Speaker is in the works, while Hromada regroups and the Communists proudly stick to their “principles,” promoting an unidentified quartet, perhaps led by Oleksandr Tkachenko of the Peasant Party.
Retiring Speaker Oleksandr Moroz told The Day, “I cannot comment on what I am not privy to, but my faction is looking at Tkachenko’s candidacy.”
According to other versions Mr. Rabynovych (who has the President’s ear) seems to want Tkachenko to head the government and favors as Speaker either NDP adherent Bandurka, Pliushch, or Communist Symonenko. No one is ruling out Social Democrat Viktor Medvedchuk, who, according to Progressive Socialist leader Natalia Vitrenko, would be acceptable to her faction as would be Tkachenko.
Perhaps some of the Communists will overcome their rock-hard scruples and give Pavlo Lazarenko the gavel of which he dreams in some kind of package deal including the government, reform, and God knows what else...

The Lazarenko-Moroz duo seems not to have enjoyed success. Perhaps second stringer Oleksandr Tkachenko has a chance?
