Will Someone Answer for a Man-Made Famine After 50 Years?

10 February, 00:00

The Ivano-Frankivsk regional council has opened a criminal case on the man-made famine of 1947 in the region's Horodenka and Sniatyn districts. In order to establish the facts after over 50 years the prosecutor's office has all those who lived through the famine to assist the investigation by providing their accounts of what took place.

The criminal case was opened under articles 99 and 158 of the Criminal Codex then in effect in the Ukrainian SSR providing for criminal sanctions against officials for negligence in the performance of their official duties and for not giving aid to those requiring it, states UNIAN.

Chief regional prosecutor Yuri Yurchenko states that materials gathered thus far in the case of the Man-Made Famine of 1947 are still insufficient to determine the historical facts.
