Today we again broach the subject of the intelligentsia and its role, particularly that of noted cultural figures, in the presidential campaign. We will approach it at a different angle and at what we believe is a different level of perception. Remarkably, this subject interests the people, rather than figures of culture and the arts, who are supposed to voice and portray that people's ideas and expectations. On the one hand, this is a manifestation of confidence which, at this period of total, at times hastily speculative reassessment of values, means a great deal. On the other hand, it is a great burden of responsibility shouldered by the intelligentsia. It is the responsibility of choice, because at these fateful times no one in Ukraine can justify himself using clever statements like “We cannot predict what consequences our words (or songs) will have...” We can. Someone bestowed with the greatest authority, his people's love, cannot be free from this responsibility, and nor can he decide for himself what is of greater importance: his fellow countrymen's or current regime's confidence. On page 6 is a letter from The Day 's mail.
