VALENTYNA YESIPOVA’S WORK “GOVERNMENT AND OPPOSITION” IS ALSO DISPLAYED IN LONDON. ON THE ONE HAND, THE PICTURE CONVEYS DUALITY AND THE STRUGGLE OF POLITICAL FORCES, BUT, ON THE OTHER, THIS FACE-OFF IS JUST A GAME, A DRAPERY THAT COVERS THE CRACKED WALLS OF OUR PRESENT-DAY REALITY / Photo provided by the author

On June 11 exhibition of Ukrainian photographers who are members of the Royal Photographic Society opened at the Ukrainian Embassy in London. These photos will also be presented at the gallery of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain.

The Royal Photographic Society is one of the most prestigious photographic societies in the world. It was founded in 1853 by renowned British photographer Roger Fenton. Interestingly, in 1855, he became famous for his photos taken in Ukraine: these were the photographs of the Crimean War. The Royal Photographic Society is open to photographers from all over the world, but the selection of works is quite strict. This is especially important in the light of the fact that this month exhibitions of works by Ukrainian photographers, who are the members of this organization, including Andrii Kotliarchuk, Anatolii Kovalsky, Yurii Sanin, Valentyna Yesipova, and Viktor Zaporozhchenko, will be held in London.

Generally, integration of Ukrainian art in the global art space made it possible for the Ukrainian photo artists to present their works in the international arena, which has been proved by their participation in international auctions like Sotheby’s, Phillips de Pury, and, of course, by the increasing interest from European collectors.

Prior to the exhibition of five Ukrainian photographers in London, an exposition of 30 of their works in various genres and styles was held at the Kyiv-based ANN Gallery with the assistance of the Embassy of Ukraine in the United Kingdom. In general, the exhibitions in London were made possible through the work of the curator of the project “Ukrainian Art and the World” Hanna Lavrekha and the representative in Great Britain Volodymyr Yamin, who showed the works of Ukrainian photographers to the President of the Royal Photographic Society Roy Robertson. Robertson was greatly impressed by the contemporary photo art in Ukraine.
