YELTSIN CHOOSES KIRIYENKO

31 March, 1998 - 00:00

The president of Russia Boris Yeltsin has decided on his choice for Prime Minister. He reported he will advise the lower house of the Russian parliament to consider the acting Premier of Russia Sergei Kiriyenko. In his traditional speech, Yeltsin characterized him as a hard worker, not related to any political parties and blocs. He also hinted Kiriyenko is the right man for this post.

The head of the Russian government is elected by vote in the State Duma, where Kiriyenko’s candidacy did not call forth any enthusiasm whatever. However, Yeltsin announced that he will not hesitate to dismiss the Duma in case his candidate is not approved. The deputies are unlikely to go that far.
