Capital youth had an unusual celebration of the International Students'
Day. Last Tuesday dozens of young people carried out an action protesting
violations of the freedom of expression Ukraine.
The Youth-Ukraine's Hope Society organized the picketing, accusing the
Kyiv City Council of limiting the work of "an influential and popular newspaper"
here. Pickets told The Day they had Kievskie Vedomosti in
mind. According to the action organizers, secret censorship and shutting
down opposition publications indicate the authorities' intolerance of a
free press.
For the first time in recent years, young people went into the streets
to defend not their current interests (like stipends being paid, jobs,
etc.) but the principals of the civilized society they want to live in
tomorrow.
