IN 1998 — 2005 UKRAINE WILL BUY 6 BILLION CUBIC METERS OF UZBEK GAS EACH YEAR

Within the framework of Uzbekistan’s President Islam Karimov’s visit to Ukraine February 18-20, an agreement has been signed on the supply of Uzbek gas to Ukraine in the course of 1998-2005 and another one, on the transit of Turkmen gas through Uzbekistan for Ukrainian consumers. As Ivan Piven, Head of the Foreign Trade Department of the State Committee on Oil/Gas, told an Infobank correspondent, in the course of the nearest eight years Ukraine will purchase 6 billion cubic meters of Uzbek gas each year. Neither the price for the gas nor transit rates are fixed in these documents, they will be determined immediately by the gas traders of the two states.

10 other documents were also signed during Islam Karimov’s stay in Kyiv. The most important of them are the agreement on friendship and further widening of cooperation in all spheres, a Consular Convention, agreement on the participation of Ukrainian companies in the building and reconstruction of railroads in Uzbekistan, agreement on cooperation in the sphere of protection of intellectual ownership rights, the agreement on further cooperation in the military and military/engineering spheres.

As it was said during the joint press conference of the Presidents of Ukraine and Uzbekistan, Leonid Kuchma and Islam Karimov respectively, an agreement has also been reached concerning the supplying Ukrainian cotton mills with Uzbek raw materials on clearing terms. According to these agreements, in the nearest 2-3 years Ukraine will receive over 800 tons of cotton from Uzbekistan, for which Ukraine will pay in cereals and metal products.
