The NBU bans commercial banks from counting their holdings in domestic government bonds as part of their reserve requirements as of June 1. Domestic bonds purchased by banks at direct government auctions from November 17, 1997 to June 1, 1998 may be used to offset bank reserve requirements until redeemed. Demand for domestic bonds may grow before June 1 and fall thereafter.
