DAEWOO AND GENERAL MOTORS BEGIN PREPARING PRODUCTION OF OPEL CARS AT AVTOZAZ

10 March, 1998 - 00:00

As Vadym Liashchuk, Deputy Minister of Industrial Policy, said at a briefing on March 5, Daewoo (South Korea) and General Motors (USA) have signed a general agreement March 5 on the principles of joint technical, marketing and financial policy. This agreement is similar to that signed by the French companies Renault and Citroen. The document signed by Daewoo and General Motors makes it possible for them to open at the Zaporizhzhia-based auto plant (within the AvtoZAZ-Daewoo joint venture) another assembly line for the Opel-Astra and Opel-Vectra models manufactured by General Motors.

According to Mr. Liashchuk, $120 million may be invested in the new conveyor line. At the same time General Motors reserves the right to sell Opels manufactured at the plant in Zaporizhzhia through its own dealer network.

Liashchuk added that in order to prevent Daewoo having a monopoly in the Ukrainian market the government is holding talks with the GAZ (Russia) and Suzuki (Japan) companies concerning auto manufacturing investment projects similar to the Korean one. AvtoZAZ Director General Oleksandr Sotnykov, who was present at the briefing, said that talks are being held with Daewoo on the assembly of two types of Jeeps, vans, and forklifts at AvtoZAZ's subsidiary in Illichivsk (Odesa oblast).

He also noted that 136 Ukrainian cooperating plants in Melitopol, Zhytomyr, Bila Tserkva, and Kyiv will take part in automobile production in Zaporizhzhia. According to Oleksandr Sotnykov, these companies will supply spare parts not only to AvtoZAZ but also to Daewoo companies in Poland, the Czech Republic, Rumania, Uzbekistan, and Russia (where there is a new investment project in Taganrog).
