DURING EBRD MEETING THE UKRAINIAN GOVERNMENT WAS NOT ALWAYS FRIENDLY

13 November, 2012 - 00:00

Peter Khlobil, representative of the international CEE Bankwatch Network reported this at the press conference of non-governmental organizations, which took place in the Ukrainian House on Tuesday. Khlobil said that a number of environmental protection organizations members were arrested in Kyiv for spreading letters demanding the EBRD to stop financing power unit construction at the Rivne and Khmelnytsky nuclear plants. Although National Security and Defense Secretary Volodymyr Horbulin announced that not a single person was arrested, Khlobil insisted that five people are still behind bars. According to him, the anti-nuclear action was organized by non-governmental organizations such as Tigra-Migra, Rainbow Keepers, and Ecoprotection. He reported that 23 NGOs had prepared letters addressed to the EBRD board in support of their arrested members. Khlobil also expressed dissatisfaction with the entry control in the Ukrainian House during the annual meeting, where security was checking on every incoming paper. According to him, law enforcers tried to withdrawn a letter in support of arrested members of anti-nuclear movement.
