ZAPORIZHZHIA.
Former Prime Minister Yevhen Marchuk said on February 25 during his election campaign meeting with the public, the new government regulation restricting used car imports to Ukraine has done much more harm to Ukraine on its way to Europe than any possible benefits which might come from the creation of an AvtoZAZ-Daewoo joint venture.
Mr. Marchuk believes the benefits from the creation of the joint venture with South Korea's Daewoo are very dubious due to the company's non-competitiveness seen in the lack of European demand for its cars manufactured at its plant in Hungary. The former Prime Minister emphasized that a few Russian car plants had considered the ways of cooperating with Daewoo but later refused. According to him, the Ukrainian car-manufacturing industry must be saved but not in the way the current government is trying to do it.
According to preliminary information from sources at the AvtoZAZ plant in Zaporizhzhia, the signing of founding documents of the joint venture between this plant and the corporation Daewoo is scheduled for March 3.
