GAS TRADERS CONDUCT A RECONNAISSANCE IN FORCE What will Naftohaz Ukrainy answer?

13 November, 2012 - 00:00

The President will obviously veto bill Parliament passed On Preventing Violations of the Law in Privatization of the Oil and Natural Gas Complex, Oleksandr Sverdlov, Energy Minister in Hromada's shadow government, told The Day.

The bill, Interfax Ukraine reports, would prohibits the transfer to the Naftohaz Ukrainy (Oil & Gas of Ukraine) National Stock Company of state owned stock in Ukrhazprom (Ukrainian Gas Industry), Ukrnafta (Ukrainian Oil), Ukrhaz (Ukrainian Natural Gas) and other joint-stock companies shares and property used for the transport, storage, and refining of oil and natural gas, which are exempt from privatization due to their significance to the state. Sale of stock in state owned oil and gas companies would also be banned.

The attack or, rather, reconnaissance in force against Naftohaz was made by former gas traders anxious about present situation on oil and gas market which is almost closed to their participation, experts believe.

However, some members of Parliament voted for the law are confident that it is necessary to create a national corporation. The Ukrainian oil and gas market should be a state monopoly, believes People's Deputy Anatoly Novyk: "If a state monopoly helps strength our national security, it should be welcomed. Verkhovna Rada has prevented attempts to privatize state property that bypass law."
