GDP Dropped 3.2% in 1997

Preliminary estimates of the State Committee on Statistics show that the gross national product dropped by 3.2% in 1997. Industrial output amounted to Hr 73.5 billion, including Hr 67.2 billion worth of products supplied by self-accounting enterprises.

Production stabilized mainly through export-oriented and primary industries. In the fuel sector, output rose by 4.5%, while ferrous and nonferrous metallurgy rose 7.7% and 2.7%, respectively. Production decline in the petrochemical industry was 0.6%. In the agrarian sector, the downturn slowed to 2% compared to 16% in 1996.

The consolidated budget deficit amounted to Hr 5.0879 billion (or 6.4% GDP) in 1997. Hr 4.1314 billion from internal financial sources and Hr 1.5019 billion from foreign loans covered the budget deficit, reports Interfax-Ukraine.
