GOVERNMENT TO DOUBLE PRODUCTION OF BEET SUGAR TWOFOLD WITHIN NEXT TWO YEARS

According to the Cabinet of Ministers guidelines to oblast state administrations, production of beet root and sugar is to grow to 30 million and 3.464 million tons, respectively, in 1998, and to 37.5 million and 4.353 million tons, respectively, in 1999. Last year figures were 17.5 million and 2.32 million tons, respectively, says a State Statistics Committee report.

The Cabinet accordingly urges the National Bank of Ukraine and commercial banks to extend to December 1, 1998, the repayment of loans received by domestic sugar plants to process the 1997 beet crop.

The Cabinet of Ministers also ordered the allocation of Hr 48.2 million from the state leasing fund to purchase 400 domestically made beet harvesters, 150 beet loaders, 130 beet tops cutters and 67 beet sowers. Another Hr 20 million is to be allocated from the Cabinet's reserve fund to buy spare parts.

The Finance Ministry was ordered to allocate by June 1, 1998 Hr 22.6 million from armed forces and law-enforcement forces budgets to purchase sugar via tenders.
