Milk for the Electorate

24 February, 1998 - 00:00

A Loan Will Help Diary Plant Before and a Little Even After the Elections

Milk prices in Kyiv are now regulated in accordance with a decision by city state administration chairman Oleksandr Omelchenko. This was done, as the document states, in order to help the underprivileged and prevent inappropriate price increases on food. Considering the proximity of elections, no doubt this decision has a populist character.

The wholesale and retail milk prices from the Halakton and Miskmolzavod (city milk plant) No. 3 come under regulation. Both have been given financial assistance for buying the necessary raw milk, with Miskmolzavod No. 3 receiving Hr 2 million and Halakton 1.5 million, plus in the next few days they will be exempted for paying for land in 1998. The financial assistance is repayable at 8% annual interest, that is, practically free.

The loans justify themselves. Last year Halakton with only 115,000 profit took out loans at 30 and 35% per annum. Thus the authorities’ solicitude for underprivileged voters goes to the milk plants.

However, without still more financial support autumn milk prices will likely rise. And will someone think about the poor then?
