NO SUGAR QUOTAS IN 1998

24 February, 1998 - 00:00

Agriculture Minister Yuri Karasyk recommended that heads of regional agricultural departments begin making contracts on sugar beet supplies to sugar refineries. The Ukrainian News Agency reports that such contracts are expected to be completed by March 1. The Minister believes that a Cabinet resolution on sugar beet and sugar production in Ukraine will be signed by then, and that the document will order sugar beet cultivation to be expanded to 1.2 million hectares. No quotas will be imposed on sugar beet and sugar output. The government is also likely to discard the practice of instituting minimum sugar prices.
