Ukraine Joining Bill of Exchange Conventions

16 November, 1999 - 00:00

The 1930 Geneva conventions on bill of exchange and promissory note circulation will come into force in Ukraine on January 6, 2000. As Interfax- Ukraine was told at the State Commission for Securities and Stock Market, with reference to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this decision has been approved by the UN General Secretary Koffi Annan.

On July 6, 1999, Verkhovna Rada passed the law On Joining the 1930 Geneva Conventions on Bill of Exchange and Promissory Note Circulation, whereby Ukraine joined all three conventions: on abiding by the Uniform Negotiable Instruments Law (No. 358), on settling some problems connected with bills of exchange and promissory notes (No. 359), and on stamp duty on bills of exchange and promissory notes (No. 360). According to the Commission, Ukraine’s joining these conventions will allow it to resolve part of its regulatory problems connected with functioning of the bill-of-exchange market in this country.
