Ukrainian Lycee Students Successfully Manage Virtual Banks

29 May, 1999 - 00:00

In Dusseldorf, organizers of the Bank Masters computerized financial game
were surprised at the end by the Ukrainian team's young age. The more so
that its participants - Hanna Lukanina, Valeriya Kruhliak (a tenth grader
at the Kyiv Business Lycee) and team captain Vyacheslav Shoptenko (a 1998
lycОe graduate) - tried a young specialists' and students' economics and
banking game for the first time.

This time, about 400 European teams competed for several months in the
management of virtual banks. As a result, the Kyiv lycОe students finished
seventh.

The young bankers already study by themselves Samuelson's university
textbook and know about theories of McConnel and Brew. But the young people
are not at all academically-minded. One of the participants in the game's
previous rounds believes that the main thing is "to test economic strategies
in action. Only then you will see what are really worth. And it is such
a treat to work out strategies and make decisions!"

Enthusiasm for the game could well grow into professionalism. But today
the team is not very satisfied with itself: "if only we had made it into
the top three, for the winners go on to advanced studies in German banks..."

The game's organizers make no secret of their main goal: the selection
of talented students for careers in banks. Thus domestic financial employers
will have to watch out, for the Germans quickly appreciate the significance
of mental resources.
