OSCE is Interested Whether Freedom of Expression Still Exists in Ukraine

13 November, 2012 - 00:00

The Day was visited by a group of representatives from the Office of the Representative on Freedom of the Media of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe last Wednesday.

The OSCE experts are in Kyiv to study the conditions under which local media have to function and what help the organization could render independent periodicals. Ms. Beate Maeder-Metcalf, an OSCE media adviser, said the Organization’s attention, mixed with a degree of concern, was drawn to Ukraine by the report of the High Commissioner for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, prepared during previous elections to the Verkhovna Rada. The guests wanted to know in particular whether the case of Kievskie Vedomosti was an isolated incident or part of a planned campaign to subdue inconvenient publications and also whether the freedom of expression will be guaranteed during the next presidential campaign.
