Scientists predict that most of the aircraft taking off early in the next millennium will be made up of over one-half composite materials. Independent UkraineХs first such model, AN-140, has 16% of these Тtwenty-first century components.У Similar materials were used in making the unique AN-70Хs tail rudder and stabilizer.

Parts made of composite materials including plastics reinforced by high strength fiber and tissue prove as enduring as those of metal, while being lighter by 20-30%. Although aircraft designers and manufacturers have long been aware of the composites, the latter are still used in minor safety risk units: fairing, chassis, cargo hatches, intakes, and engine pods.

In recent years, far from being favorable for UkraineХs scientific and technological progress, the Antonov Design Bureau has carried out a unique program, producing lighter, larger, and more reliable aircraft models using composite materials. Apart from certain finished products С the AN-70 tail, ailerons, and fuselage С the Bureau has developed the entire technological chain, from the required installations to disposal methods.

Kyiv aircraft designersХ project has been nominated for a Ukrainian State Prize in science and engineering.
