10 February, 00:00
Zaporizhzhia celebrated the sixtieth anniversary of its honorary citizen, famed power-lifter Leonid Zhabotynsky, who won Olympic gold twice and set nineteen world records. The Soviet Union awarded him two orders of the Toiling Red Banner.

The celebration took place in the palace of the open stock company DniproSpetzStal (Dnipro Special Steel), the colors of which he defended in the past. Oblast State Administration head Vyacheslav Pokhalsky and the city mayor Oleksandr Holovko awarded the veteran athlete a Cossack saber and mace. A youth tournament, organized by Ruslan Zhabotynsky, the eldest son of Leonid, was successfully held, attracting over 200 participants, who competed for prizes of the weightlifting king of 1960s. Also, until they moved to Moscow, Zhabotynsky's wife, Raisa, worked as vice-principal of high school No. 1, which always had sports classes.
