Early Sunday morning the world learned the name of the
planet's best tennis player and a few hours later the winner was determined
of Kyiv's Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) UMC Open-99 Tournament.
In the finals Emelio Alvarez of Spain (ranked 113th in the world) met Russian
Andrei Stoliarov of Moscow. Unfortunately, it was a less than fierce battle.
Making it to the finals of an ATP match for the first time in his life
Stoliarov clearly felt out of his depth. In addition, frankly speaking,
in terms of both physical condition and technique, Andrei clearly gave
place to his more experienced rival, who trounced the Russian 6:1 and 6:2..
In general the victor took the win laconically: «Kyiv is worthy to hold
an ATP tournament. The competition here was organized on the highest level.
In addition, the spectators were very friendly. I liked it and will come
here next year without fail.»
Meanwhile in New York the Grand Slam US Open super tournament,
in which the world's best players took part. On Sunday morning the winner,
recognized by ATP as the world's top racket, was Andre Agassi, who defeated
Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia, and in the finals overpowered his compatriot
Tod Martin. In the women's division Serena Williams netted the top spot.
