Andriy Shevchenko came to watch soccer and Odesa fans to fist-fight

17 July, 00:00

The Saturday before last Dynamo Kyiv played a national championship match against Odesa's Chornomorets. Rather an ordinary event, at first glance, and the score — 4:1 in favor of Valery Lobanovsky's team — was unexpected to none. But there was a special circumstance: among the spectators at this match was former Dynamo, and now Milan, player Andriy Shevchenko (photo). Naturally, The Day 's correspondent could not keep from asking the forward about his first impressions of Italian soccer.

«As I expected, it is fast and highly skilled, and I am glad I did not get lost in it.»

«Were you afraid?»

«I won't deny that I was: what if I don't make it? I was a leader in Kyiv, but I might as well be put on the substitute bench in Milan. But I think there is no more reason to worry. A goal against Bayern Munich (but from a penalty shot), two goals and one goal- assisting pass in the match against another good German club, Bayern Lewerkusen, which we beat 3 to 2, reassured me I still can shoot goals.»

«If we go by the press, you had an enthusiastic welcome in Italy.»

«But there is no ‘middle' welcome over there: they give you either a big hand or the bird.»

«Do you miss Kyiv?»

«Yes, we were given three days off, so I flew here.»

However, the match proved rather noticeable not only because of an unexpected and pleasant meeting. Do you remember that any visit of Moscow's Spartak to Kyiv was accompanied by law-enforcement agencies being alerted? Perhaps longing for the good old days, Dynamo and Chornomorets supporters picked a furious fist fight in a Hydropark cafe... An ordinary match indeed?
