Anzhela Balakhonova Vaults Ukraine to Sixth Place in Europe

13 November, 2012 - 00:00

Ukrainian athletes brought home three gold, two silver, and one bronze medals from the European Track and Field Championship, which took place in Budapest, senior coach of the State Sports Committee of Ukraine Leonid Smielash told The Day. In the medals summary Ukraine placed sixth, outdistancing powerful teams from Italy, Portugal, Spain, and France.

Only women celebrated victories on the final days of the tournament. Female sprinters won two silver medals. Tetiana Tereshchuk placed second after Ionela Tyrlia of Romania in the 400 meters race and Zhanna Pintusevych came in second in the 200 meters. After the failure in her first race in the tournament (she was fourth in the 100 meters) our world champion was eager to take revenge on her favorite distance. Unfortunately, she was defeated for the first time in a tournament of this level by her main rival, 30 years old Irina Privalova of Russia. Privalova placed first with 22.62 seconds.

The female pole vault was included in the program of the European Championship for the first time and Kyiv-born Anzhela Balakhonova came out on top. In prefect style she topped 4.31 meters placing first. Nicole Rieger-Humbert and Ivonna Buschbaum of Germany were second and third respectively. A golden finale!
