The seventeenth European championship in track and field began last Tuesday in Budapest. For six days fans of the queen of sports were able to watch the best European athletes compete. The previous successes of Ukrainian athletes give us hope for medals and results. Four years ago the Ukrainian track and field team brought back from Helsinki, Finland, three gold, six silver, and three bronze medals.
The leading expert of the State Sports Committee Leonid Smielash told The Day, that that Ukrainian team chaired by senior coach and deputy president of Ukrainian Track and Field Federation Valery Aleksandrov is in a good fighting mood. It consists of 16 male and 22 female athletes, among whom there are such seasoned leaders as sprinters Zhanna Pintusievych and Tetiana Tereshchuk, Anzhela Balakhnova (pole vault), shot putters Vita Pavlysh, Oleksandr Bahach, and Yuri Belonoh. In addition to these unconditional pretenders for gold medals, Olena Hovorova (triple jump), discus thrower Vitaly Sydorov, and long jumper Oleksiy Lukashevych could also hit the bull's eye.
