Benfica Guarantees Turned Out to be All Bluff

19 January, 1999 - 00:00

Negotiations between Kyiv Dynamo and Lisbon Benfica regarding Oleksandr
Luzhny's transfer have been canceled because Benfica failed to secure financial
guarantees, reports the Kyiv Dynamo press service.

The captain of our team, taking into consideration Luzhny's great service
to our team, gave him the chance to continue his career in a Western soccer
club. Despite invitations from other clubs, Kyiv Dynamo management responded
to the persistent desire of Benfica head coach Gram Suness and the club's
president Vali to buy the rights on Luzhny's transfer.

Oleh Luzhny flew to Lisbon on December 11 for a medical examination,
and a contract was signed between two clubs. However, Benfica's management
has repeatedly failed to keep its promises. On January 8, Benfica made
another attempt to cheat on Dynamo by faxing a copy of a bank check, which
was not accepted by the bank that serves Dynamo, the Dynamo press service
reports. Since the Lisbon club failed to secure financial guarantees, all
previously achieved agreements between clubs, and the agreement between
Benfica and Luzhny will not come into force, the contracts between them
are annulled, and thus no transfer is possible. Unfortunately, this misunderstanding
spoiled the player's well-deserved vacation. He also failed to begin training
on time, although both Kyiv Dynamo and Ukraine's national team count on
him in upcoming games in the League of Champions and 2000 European Cup
prelims.
