Chess Challenger Closes in on Kasparov

13 November, 2012 - 00:00

Challenger Aleksei Shirov of Spain defeated Vladimir Kramnik of Russia - 5.5:5.3. In October he will face Garry Kasparov for the world championship. 25 year-old Shirov was born in Riga and his playing styles had been strongly influenced by his compatriot Mikhail Tal. Tal was nicknamed the Hussar of Riga for his complex sharp game styles. Shirov is also known as a swashbuckler.

In the game against Kramnik, he showed that he knows all about positional play. His chances against Kasparov are not very high, but considering Aleksei’s working ability and optimism, we can be sure this game will be worth our attention and time.
