The final Cup of Germany soccer match was held at Berlin's Olympiastadion.
76,000 spectators cheered Munich Bayern and Bremen Werder on.
The Bremen team included in its starting lineup Ukrainian legionnaire
Yuri Maksymov. Already in the fourth minute he open the score after a nice
pass from Kristoff Dabrowski. Later as well our compatriot was one of the
most conspicuous players on the pitch. Although Maksymov is not be called
under Ukrainian national colors for Euro-2000 qualifying matches, ostensibly
due to his poor physical condition, he could more than pull his weight
on the national team now, judging by this match. After all, this was Werder's
only goal in the game. It is only thanks to Mario Bassler's efforts that
the Bavarians drew the game 1-1 into overtime. Then the result was determined
by a series of penalty shots.
The abortive penalty kick by the Munich star Lothar Matteus placed Werder
ahead at the very beginning of the series. The decisive goal was scored
by the 38-year-old Bremen veteran Frank Rost.
Yuri Maksymov has thus become the first Ukrainian legionnaire in history
to win the Cup of Germany.
