Both representatives of Ukraine lost in the second round of the Big Helmet international tennis tournament, which is underway in Wimbledon. According to Andriy Medvediev’s coach, Oleksandr Dolhopolov, his trainee’s match with Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia dragged on for two days.
The rain interfered with the schedule of the game: the opponents had to wait long for it to stop and go back and forth between the court and the locker room. After Ivanisevic won the first two sets on Thursday-6:3, 7:6 (7:4)-there was some hope in the third set (6:4), and Medvediev got a chance.
However, the rainy English weather intervened again, and the match was completed only on Friday night. The result of the last, fourth set-0:6-is certainly disconcerting for Andriy. Oleksandr Dolhopolov pointed out that Andriy and he will keep looking for ways out of a deep psychological crisis: coming up are important tournaments in Bastade (Sweden), Stuttgart (Germany), and Toronto (Canada). It was in Stuttgart where Andriy at the age of 17 won in 1992 by beating Thomas Muster of Austria, Stefan Edberg of Sweden, and Wayne Ferreira of South Africa. Perhaps, this time Andriy will finally have more luck in Stuttgart again.
Olena Tatarkova also lost her game in the second round. After the sensational victory over the French Marie Piers she could not withstand the attacks of the South African Marian de Shvardt-4:6, 6:7 (5:7).
