Mazepa Beats Figaro
The Kyiv Hippodrome hosted its main event of the year, the Derby 1999 horse
race with the hippodrome's best thoroughbred trotters taking part. One
of the most interesting heats was for the Quadrennial Grand Prize where
the favorite was a Russian bay stallion named Mazepa, and he led the whole
race. But at the finish there was a sensation as the American bay trotter
Figaro let loose with a burst of speed and finishing first, dismaying the
bookies and those who play the ponies alike, reports The Day's Kyrylo
STADNYCHENKO.
Ukrainian National Team Nets 20 Medals
The Spanish Mediterranean city of Palma de Mallorca has become in recent
days the symbol of world student sports. The Student Games have gathered
the strongest juniors in practically all summer sports. As expected, the
Ukrainian team has reaped a bountiful harvest of medals. As of today, it
has 5 gold, 7 silver, and 8 bronze medals to its credit.
Oleksandr Beresh of Kherson was the first to win a gold medal for our
team, becoming overall champion in gymnastics. Regretfully, the arbitrary
rule of referees kept Oleksandr from winning more gold. Our fencers are
also doing outstandingly. Kyivan Vadym Hutseit emerged victorious in the
individual saber competition, while the girls' team gained the highest
award in the epee. The Ukrainian team was composed of Yeva Vybornova, Viktoriya
Titova, Natalia Hruzynska, and Hanna Horynova.
The track and field athletes also have gold medals to their credit.
Kyivan Olena Hovorova made the longest triple jump, 14 m. 99 cm., and Serhiy
Lebed was the first to finish the 5-km. walk, reports The Day's
Kyrylo STADNYCHENKO.
