Zaporizhzhian Diver Best in the World


Leader of the Ukrainian national team Olena Zhupina of Zaporizhzhia has
once again demonstrated her high class at the last stage of the World Diving
Cup championships in Elektrostal (Russia). She won two golden medals: in
10-meter board diving and, together with Hanna Sorokina (also from Zaporizhzhia)
in simultaneous diving, reports Oleksandr HONCHARUK, The Day.

Ukrainian Places Third in Chess Tourney


Ruslan Ponomariov, 15, from Kramatorsk, finished third in a major international
tournament in France, winning 5.5 points out of 9. In the final round,
Ruslan playing black defeated the Moldovan Viorel Bologan, a long-time
leader. Frenchmen Joel Lotier won the tournament with 6.5 points, with
Bologan running up 0.5 points behind. Vladislav Tkachov (Kazakhstan) and
Etienne Bacreau (France) gained as many points as Ponomariov, but their
additional indicators fell short. Lviv-born Oleksandr Belavsky, now playing
for Slovenia, garnered 3.5 points.
