The all-Ukrainian rapier competition ended in Kyiv as a phase in the Ukrainian
national qualifiers for the next world championships. There were two surprising
results: Liudmyla Vasylieva (Lviv) with the highest ratings found herself
placed fifth while Olena Syzmatulina (Kyiv), anything but a favorite, beat
Diana Koltsova (Kyiv), becoming the tournament's main find.

The eleventh penultimate stage of the World Swimming Cup has ended in the
German city of Gelsenkirchen, where Ukrainian athletes made a spectacular
show. Yana Klochkova won all the three medley distances, as well as the
women's 100 meters in a Ukrainian record time 2.80 seconds per meter. Denys
Sylantiev twice finished first in the 100 and 200 meter butterfly. The
final twelfth World Cup stage is taking place at the town of Imperia. Sylantiev
is so far leading in aggregate standings, 17 points ahead of Australian
Jeff Hugill, while Klochkova trails by six points Canadian Marianne Limpert
in medley swimming, The Day's Serhiy MAKHUN reports.
