The sixth round of ISU Grand-Prix ended in Sapporo, Japan. Ukrainian-born
Olena Liashenko was leading after the program of required elements but
placed fourth in the summary. Since she ranks third in the overall rating
(Elena Sokolova of Russia is ranked first), she will participate in the
tournament's finals early next year in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

New NOC Head

The ninth General Assembly of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine
has elected a new President, Ivan Fedorenko, then Chairman of the State
Committee for Sports. 151 ballots of the newly elected NOC members were
cast. The previous membership was exposed to rather sharp criticism, although
its performance was finally proclaimed "satisfactory" (as would be expected,
of course). Ivan Fedorenko's contenders were previous NOC President Valery
Borzov and Anatoly Pysarenko, President of the Weightlifting Federation
of Ukraine. True, both withdrew after their programs were presented and
discussed, reports The Day's Petro MARUSENKO.

In the World Championship in unarmed self-defense taking place in Turin
Ukraine has not been without laurels. All seven Ukrainian participants
have won medals (five gold, one silver, and one bronze), and our team is
in second place after Russia, which is represented in all weight categories.
In the photo (left to right) are three of our athletes: Oleksiy Savynov
(bronze medalist), Viktor Maksymchuk (silver), and Ruslan Zadvorny (gold).
