Lviv athlete Mykhailo Slyvynsky won two bronze medals in the World Championship in Keln, Germany, placing third in both the 200 and 500 meter races. His younger brother Oleksiy Slyvynsky is also bringing home a medal after coming in second in the 200 meter race, Ukrainian national team manager Dmytro Morhun told The Day.
The Solling class sailing world championship took place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, where Ukrainian crew of Serhiy Pichuhin came in second in the summary. The Ukrainian team lost to Russia by only two points. 67 crews from 25 countries competed for the gold in this regatta, which is a preliminary for the 2000 Olympics. The four best teams will qualify for Sydney.
Atlanta silver medals winners, Ukrainian athletes Ruslana Taran and Olena Pakholchyk (470 Olympic class) came in first in the world tournament held in Spanish Palma-de-Majorca, defeating Danish and German crews. The win has secured them an Olympic berth in Sydney. Yachtsmen Yevhen Braslavets and Ihor Matviyenko were not as successful, placing sixth, but they also made it into the Olympic regatta, Serhiy Makhun reports.
Ukrainian female athletes succeeded in the next-in-turn Grand Prix held in Devenport, the Netherlands. In the team summary Ukraine placed second after Russia. In combined events Olena Vitrychenko came in second after Alina Kabaeva, World's and European champion of Russia. But in separate events, Vitrychenko won gold (hoop), silver (ribbon) and bronze (rope) medals. Tamara Yerofieyeva of Kyiv was also successful in the Grand Prix, making it into the top five in the tournament.
