Ukrainian aircraft modelers won two gold and one silver medals in the world championship held at Chaika airdrome near Kyiv. They had special luck in races, where Oleksiy Zheliezko of Kryvy Rih and Denys Mykhailov of Luhansk won the two top spots. Representatives of 29 countries from around the world participated in the tournament.
Two Ukrainian duets, Julia Obertas and Dmytro Palamarchuk of Dnipropetrovsk and Tetiana Kurkudum and Yuri Kocherzhenko of Odesa were victorious at the first stage of the junior championship Alpine Cup series held in St. Jerves, France. Another figure skater, Oleksandr Smokavin from Odesa, came in sixth in the men’s singles.
The Ukrainian Olympic Hope junior team came in second in the team summary at the European championship held in Jurmala, Latvia. Just as at the regular championship, they only lost to Russian team, although they are bringing home two gold, three silver, and four bronze medals. Viktor Zinoviev of Kryvy Rih and Ruslan Ohulu of Pavlohrad won in their weight categories.
Pentathlon fans have already forgotten the international successes of Ukrainian athletes. Since the times of Borys Onyshchenko of Lviv and Pavlo Leniov of Kyiv, Ukrainians have failed to win. But recently the news was passed from the Czech Republic’s Ust-upon-Laba, where the junior championship had been held. Our junior athletes came in first in the relay and in the team summary, scoring 5153 points and 15,417 points respectively. Another Ukrainian athlete Serhiy Kravchenko came in the first in men’s singles with 5436 points.
