Ivan Kyrychenko of Mariupol has completed an over two year circumnavigation of the globe in a cruise yacht. During this time he went around the world three times. More than once the intrepid yachtsman fought strong winds and high waves. But now it is all over and he is back home. President Kuchma awarded him an Order of Courage second class.
British Airways has conducted an Olympiad for homeless children in Kyiv's Hydropark. This event is a part of a broad child support action called Help Ukrainian Children. The young athletes happily participated in various competitions, the winners of which were awarded special prizes. All participants received fine T-shirts. At the end, event organizers gave the children a delicious lunch. The general manager of the company said they could carry out such actions weekly. According to incomplete data, there are over 24,000 homeless children in Ukraine.
Lina Pavchuk-Herasymenko of Chernivtsi State University became a gold medalist in the European Championship held in France.
In the finals she faced her ex-fellow Ukrainian from Sumy Vladlena Pristman, now defending the British colors and defeated her by scoring 100 points vs. 95. Lina is a quite experienced archer. Last year she was drafted by the Ukrainian national team, winning silver medals in the 1997 world championship. And here comes another success she has share with her coach Anatoly Yehorov, Ukrainian sports committee expert Zhanna Radionova told The Day.
This is not the only medal the Ukrainian Robin Hoods brought home — Kyiv-born Ihor Parkhomentko defeated Mario Casavekia by two points (108:106) and placed third. Balzhanila Tsirempilov of Russia won the men's tournament.
