Where there is no law, but every man does what is right in his own eyes, there is the least of real liberty

Divers Fail to Match Past Victories
Ukrainian divers came so painfully close to victory in Vienna, which would
have repeated their previous year's success in the European Cup tournament
held in the swimming pool of the Russian town of Elektrostal, where they
were first. The men performed a little below their usual norm, taking third
in the team rankings. But the women, headed by twice world champion Olena
Zhupina of Zaporizhzhia, outstripped their chief rivals, the Germans and
Russians.

Hanna Sorokina took the gold in the individual competition. On the three
meter springboard this protОgО of Tetiana Turova overtook at the very last
moment the renowned Zhupina, her fellow Zaporizhzhian and friend. In high
board diving, the latter was also not quite successful. Olga Khristoforova
of Russia performed an extremely complicated triple back somersault, which
she had failed to make in the past whenever she tried and finished first.
Olena took her third silver in synchronous diving, together with Sorokina.
One hopes that at the European Championship which will soon be held in
Turkey, both Olena and Hanna, together and individually, make more than
one climb to the top of the podium.

While the People Play Chess,

They are Unbeatable

When you look at this photo, you tend to recall such platitudes as
"Chess is the ambassador of peace" etc. But who cares about that now? Yugoslav
chess players have always ranked high in world rankings. Among them is
the prominent player and extremely affable person Svetozar Gligoric also
referred to as the "gallant of chess" for his personal qualities. We also
sympathize with the people of Yugoslavia, first of all, for having a leader
who is ready to draw his country into a whirlpool of troubles just to satisfy
his own ambitions. We have also had our Lenins and Stalins.

But the people are invincible. At least as long as they play chess.

"Radiant Future" for Ukrainian Aerobics?
What do we know about aerobics and fitness? As a rule, people practice
them to keep fit. But there is also a sporting aspect. Ukraine has quite
recently come out onto the international arena.

This was also contributed to by the notable successes of our athletes.
For example, Natalia Pasichna and Oleksiy Liovkin are the under-18 and
adult champions of Europe, respectively. Our athletes have not yet reached
the world class, but have been taking part in international competitions
for only quite a short time. In addition to these two champions, our national
team also includes Andriy Lisnychy and Yuliya Rudenko. Aerobics is not
so popular as rhythmic or classical gymnastics, so there are very few tournaments.
Speaking of tournaments, by the way...

Later in May Kyiv is to host a large international tournament with a
prize fund of $10,000. In terms of prize money, it is part of the Grand
Prix (with a prize fund varying between 10 and 50 thousand dollars). But,
of course, nobody is going to assign this status to a tournament being
held for the first time. However, the FUSAF president Tetiana Pasichna
is convinced that if the tournament is well organized and our competitors
offer a valiant resistance to the world leaders from Finland, Italy and
the Czech Republic, the tourney's "radiant future" is secure.
