21 year old Olena Tatarkova of Ukraine became the author of the loudest sensation in the first day of Wimbledon, defeating famous Marie Pierce of France – 7:6 (6:4), 6:3. Note that at the previous tournament of the Big Helmet – Roland Garossa, Olena also made it to the third round. Unfortunately, our fellow Ukrainian Olha Luhina lost to Sadie Noorlander of Holland – 3:6, 1:6. Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia lost to Mark Philipausis of Australia. Anna Kurnikova of Russia injured her arm and was forced to quit this tournament. Andriy Medviediev of Kyiv, Ukraine met with 18 year old Marat Safin of Russia and won in four sets despite his old injury – 6:3, 6:4, 4:6, 6:4.
