Olena Zubrylova finally strikes gold for Ukraine

19 January, 1999 - 00:00

Our female biathletes have of late forced their way into the sport's elite.
They have already gotten used to silver medals in world championships and
Olympic Games, but the gold has long remained beyond their grasp. Ternopil
Dynamo member Olena Zubrylova, who twice made it into world cup finals,
first winning the silver and then in the German town of Rupolding she finally
grabbed her first gold medal.

The Day's correspondent contacted Hennady Bakhturin of Ukraine's
State Committee on Sports:

"Hennady, your prediction that Zubrylova would not let victory slipped
out of her hands a third time has been proven right."

"I have already said that she prepared for this season in an absolutely
excellent manner, and she only needed a little lick. In the sprint she
was matchless, and on the final day outdistanced her rivals by five seconds
not to lose her chance."

"The next race will be in a few days."

"Yes, the season schedule will be grueling. Right after the meet in
Rupolding, the biathletes will travel to the Italy's Anderselve alpine
resort and a few days later to Finland for the world championship.
