Road to Sydney Runs through Kharkiv

A total of 64 athletes took part in the Kyiv Sport Event. Although the
victors, including 5 members of the Kozak (Cossack) Boxing Club, demonstrated
excellent skills, such a small number of participants in a city of 3 million
city is quite surprising.

The Day's correspondent asked Vice President of the Kyiv Boxing
Federation Serhiy STASHCHENKO, Master of Sports, to comment on such
a phenomenon.

"In the 1970s and 1980s boxing excited far more interest than it does
now. Probably, there are many other temptations today, and the sport in
its present form begins to lose its attractiveness."

"We know that Ukrainian boxing is on the upswing - second place in
the European Championship, and first in the Juniors World Championship
- but what can you say about the prospects for Kyiv boxers?"

"There are quite a few promising boxers among them, like Vasyl Tarabarov
(57 kg.) or Volodymyr Khodakivsky (60 kg.). I think they have every reason
to lay claim to spots on the National Team.

"Its core will be formed this May, at the Ukrainian Spartakiad in Kharkiv.
All competitions held in this year are aimed at the 2000 Olympic Games
in Sydney.
