Shevchenko a confident goal-shooter again

30 July, 1999 - 00:00

While Dynamo Kyiv enthusiasts continue to discuss the successful debut of forward Maksym Shatskykh in a Champions League qualification match against Zalgiris from Vilnius, another recruit — Dynamo ex-player Andriy Shevchenko — showed his mettle in Paris at a prestigious international Opel Cup tournament. Playing for his new club, the Italian Milan, against Bayern Munich, which thrashed the Kyivans in the Champions League semifinals, he opened the score of his goal for “the Italians.”

With each game at the Paris tournament lasting the prescribed 45 minutes, Andriy kicked his goal shortly before the final whistle, doing a penalty shot. This happened after the Germans had knocked down their fellow countryman Oliver Birhoff in the free-kick area. The Milan coach Alberto Zaccheroni must have instructed none other than Shevchenko to perform the penalty shot, so that he could gain confidence in scoring goals. The point is Shevchenko had missed the empty goal of his rivals some time before, when Milan was attacking. Now let us hope the Kyivan will soon also score a “working” goal. Despite being beaten by the hosting team, Paris Saint-Germaine (1 to 2), Milan took home the Opel Cup.

Milan's chief coach Alberto Zaccheroni thus commented on Andriy Shevchenko's debut in the first international match: “Andriy has completely recovered after a micro-injury of an ankle and, no doubt, helped our team very much, which acted too slowly and predictably. He can do all he wants when he gets operational space.”

In addition, another Dynamo ex-player, Oleh Luzhny, turned 31 on August 5. Oleh's birthday has already been recorded in Arsenal's Internet web-site. It is also written there that the fans dubbed him “Furious gallop” after he debuted in a match against Manchester United (2 to 1 in Arsenal's favor) , reports The Day's Oleksandr HONCHARUK .
