Vorskla of Poltava had had a successful start in the Intertoto Cup and passed to the next round. They must be grateful to Karpaty of Lviv, or to be more exact their rundown stadium, so bad that UEFA refused them in participation in the tournament. The situation is just as bad in Odesa and Dnipropetrovsk.

However, there are also other examples. The UEFA department head Eric Epple of Switzerland and his aide Adrian Titkomb of the United Kingdom made an inspection trip to Ukraine.

Q.: Mr. Epple, what are Your impressions, please?

E.E.: We have visited Poltava, Donetsk, Oleksandriya, and Kyiv. I have been to Ukraine many times, and last time I was here in 1997. I have noticed tremendous progress. Stadiums which used to have benches now have seats. The stadium in Oleksandriya was a pleasant surprise for us. The team is in the first league, and its base can be used for European Cup games.

Q.: Mr. Titkomb, you are in Ukraine for the first time. What can you say about our stadiums?

A.T.: They meet all UEFA standards in field quality, lighting, and seats. I only think more toilets are needed. However, it might just be a national trait of the English and Swiss to pay attention to lavatories. But people at the stadiums need some additional service, which would secure a certain level of comfort.
