Svitlana Medvedeva: "Andriy forbade selling the apartment, where he spent his childhood"

17 February, 1998 - 00:00

On Sunday in Kyiv a men's tennis match between Ukraine and Denmark in the Davis Cup group one. The singles match between Medvedev and Feterlain lasted four (!) hours. In doubles Medvedev and Poliakov defeated Karlsen and Feterlain 6:3, 3:6, 6:7 (4:7), 7:6 (8:6), 6:4. Then Medvedev convincingly thrashed Karlsen 6:2, 6:2, 6:2. The overall score was 3:1 and the match was decided. Then safety Denys Yakymenko lost to Feterlain 2:6, 2:5, but Ukraine still won
the match 3:2.

On the eve of the three day battle Yevhen Karelsky of The Day met the mother of Ukraine's most popular tennis player, Svitlana Medvedeva

The Day: Did Andriy change after becoming a world tennis star?

Medvedeva: Tennis is constantly in progress. Three years ago the feel of the game was enough to keep Andriy in the top ten, but now things are changing. The game now demands more power, more mobility. 1997 was a year when he had to find his game again, to struggle with himself.

The Day: I hope he is not afraid of opponents.

Medvedeva: No, of course not. He is a pro in that sense. But we need him to be an artist, an actor on court. We need him not to play ball after ball, but to lead the game according to his own rules. And he always takes responsibility.

The Day: In every game they expect him to bring three more points.

Medvedeva: It is always hard being on the edge like that. Although it is enough to keep the team in the Davis Cup first group, it takes more to take it ahead. Do you seriously believe that one man can do a miracle on order? There is no such skills difference in Women Team. Lena Tatarkova and Olya Luhy are at the same level. They are all equal, but only the best should be chosen for the Federation Cup.
